one-eighty

She did a one eighty.
彼女は考えを180度変えた。

<意味>
「one-eighty」は「180度の転換」という意味で、「do a one-eighty」で「方針・考え・気持ちが180度変わる」というイディオムになります。

<類似表現>
turn a one-eighty(手のひらを返したような態度を取る)

the real deal

If you say that a person or thing is the real deal, you mean that they are seen as being authentic and not inferior in any way.
ある人や物を「the real deal」だと言った場合、その人または物が本物で、なんら劣ったところがないとみなしていることを意味します。

<意味>
「the real deal」は直訳だと「本物の取引」ですが、人・製品・作品などが優れているという意味での「本物」「尊敬に値する存在」という意味で使われます。

<例文>
He’s the real deal and a total pro.
彼は半端なじゃない、本当のプロだ。

eat like a bird

She eats like a bird.
彼女は少食です。

<意味>
「eat like a bird」は直訳だと「鳥のように食べる」ですが、「鳥はついばむよう食べる」ことから「少食」という意味で使われます。

<類似表現>
to eat sparingly
to eat very little

<反対表現>
eat like a horse(大食いである)
eat like a pig(がつがつ食べる)

curry favour with

He’s always trying to curry favour with the boss.
彼はいつも上司のご機嫌取りをしている。

<意味>
「curry favour with」で「機嫌を取る」「取り入ろうとする」「顔色をうかがう」という意味になります。
カレーはみんな好きだからこういった表現なのかなと思っていたら、ここでの「curry」は「食べるカレー」ではなく、「馬の毛をくしで手入れする」という意味の動詞なんですね。

Good things come to those who wait.
良いことは待つ者のところに訪れる。

<意味>
この表現はことわざではないですが、日本だと「果報は寝て待て」「待てば海路の日和あり」と同じ意味で使われます。

an arm and a leg

If you say that something costs an arm and a leg, you mean that it is very expensive.
何かが「cost an arm and a leg」と言えば、「非常に高価である」ということを意味しています。

<意味>
「an arm and a leg」は、「法外な値段」「代償が高い」という意味です。

<類義語>
a lot of money、a bomb(イギリス英語)、a fortune、a pile

<例文>
I want a nice car, but I don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for it.
いい車が欲しいけど、高いお金を出して買うのは嫌だ。

get through to someone

If you say that you get through to someone, you mean that you succeed in making them understand something that you are trying to tell them.
もし誰かに「get through to」したと言えば、自分が伝えようとしていることを相手に理解してもらえたことを意味します。

<意味>
「get through to someone」は、「話・意味・メッセージが伝わる、通じる、理解させる」という意味です。

<例文>
The message was finally getting through to him.
ようやく彼にメッセージが伝わった。

How can I get it through to her that this is really important?
どうしたら、このことが本当に重要なことだと彼女にわかってもらえるんだろう?

better late than never

If you say better late than never, you think that it is better for someone or something to be late than never to arrive or to happen.
「better late than never」と言った場合、誰かが来なかったり、何かが起こったりしないよりは、遅れてもそうした方がいいと思っていることを意味します。

<意味>
「better late than never」は「遅くともせぬには勝る」で、「やらないよりはまし」という意味で使われます。

<例文>
I’m sorry I’m late.
すみません。遅くなりました。

Better late than never, but never late the better.
遅れても来ないよりはいいよ。でも、遅れない方がもっといいけどね。

go the extra mile

If you say that someone is willing to go the extra mile, you mean that they are willing to make a special effort to do or achieve something.
誰かが「go the extra mile」と言えば、何かをする、あるいは達成するために特別な努力をすることを意味します。

<意味>
「go the extra mile」を直訳すると「もう1マイル余分に行く」となり、つまり「要求された以上のことをする」ことを意味します。ここから、「一層の努力をする」「全力を尽くす」「さらに頑張る」という意味で使われます。

<例文>
Just go the extra mile to make her smile.
彼女の笑顔のために、もっと頑張りなよ。

He’s a nice guy, always ready to go the extra mile for his friends.
彼はいい奴で、友人のためならいつでもすぐに一生懸命になってくれるんだ。

slip someone’s mind

If something slips your mind, you forget about it.
もしなにかが「slip you mind」したとしたら、それを「忘れてしまった」ことになります。

<意味>
「slip someone’s mind」は、「ついうっかり忘れる」「ど忘れする」という意味です。

<例文>
I’m sorry. It slipped my mind.
ごめんなさい。うっかり忘れていました。

How could she have let something so important slip her mind?
こんなに大事なことをどうして彼女は忘れてしまったのだろう?

in the red / in the black

If you say that someone is in the red, you mean that they have spent more money than they have.
誰かが「in the red」だと言った場合、その人が持っているお金よりも多く使っていることを意味します。

<意味>
「in the red」は「赤字」という意味です。

<対義語>
「in the black」だと「黒字」になります。

<例文>
My account is $100 in the red.
私の口座は100ドルのマイナスです。

have feelings for

If you say that you have feelings for someone, you mean that you are emotionally attracted to someone.
誰かに対して「have feelings for」だと言った場合、その人に「感情的に惹かれている」という意味になります。

<意味>

「have feelings for」は「恋愛感情がある」という意味の表現です。

<例文>

I have really started to have feelings for her.
彼女のことを本当に想い始めているんだ。

I still have feelings for her.
まだ彼女に未練があるんだ。

memory like a sieve

If you say that someone have a mind like a sieve, you mean that they have a poor memory and often forget things.
誰かのことを「mind like a sieve」だと言った場合、記憶力が悪く、よく物事を忘れるという意味になります。

<意味>

「memory like a sieve」は「忘れっぽい」「物忘れがひどい」「物覚えが悪い」ことを意味するイディオムです。

<例文>

Please remind me about the meeting because I have a memory like a sieve these days.
会議のことを忘れないように私に言ってね、最近物忘れがひどいから。

rule of thumb

A rule of thumb is a rule or principle that you follow which is not based on exact calculations, but rather on experience.
「rule of thumb」とは、正確な計算ではなく、経験に基づいて従うルールや原則のことです。

<意味>

「rule of thumb」は「実用的な経験則」を意味するイディオムです。

<例文>

A good rule of thumb is to keep three months worth of expenses as an emergency savings.
緊急時の貯蓄としては、支出の3ヶ月分を目安にするとよいでしょう。

can’t see the wood for the trees

The staff here are working so hard and are so tired that they can’t see the wood for the trees.
ここのスタッフは一生懸命働いて疲れてしまっているので、全体が見えなくなってしまっている。

「can’t see the wood for the trees」は、「木を見て森を見ず」ということで、「物事の細部にとらわれると全体を見失う」という意味で使われます。

「the wood」の代わりに「the forest」も同様に使われます。

as cool as a cucumber

If someone is as cool as a cucumber, they are very relaxed, calm, and self-possessed.
誰かのことを「as cool as a cucumber」と表現した場合、とてもリラックスしている、落ち着いている、冷静沈着であることを意味しています。

bury one’s head in the sand

Don’t be an ostrich and bury your head in the sand, hoping your problems will disappear.
問題が消えてなくなっちゃいますようにと願いながら、ダチョウみたいに砂の中に頭を隠して、問題に立ち向かわないといった態度はやめなさい。

「bury one’s head in the sand」は「現実を直視しようとしない」「嫌なことから目をそらして立ち向かわない」「知らないふりをする」といった意味になります。

salt of the earth

Robert is the first to help anyone in trouble. He is the salt of the earth.
ロバートは困っている人を真っ先に助けてくれます。彼は善良な人です。

「salt of the earth」で「最も善良な人」「最も立派な人」「尊敬すべき人」といった意味になります。聖書が語源の表現です。

be floating on air / be walking on air

I can’t believe that I’ve won. I’m floating on air!
勝ったなんて信じられない。超うれしい!

「be floating on air」で「天にも昇る心地である」「うきうきしている」「夢心地である」といった意味になります。
「be walking on air」も同じ意味で使われます。

food for thought

It provides both good data and much food for thought.
良いデータであると同時に、多くの示唆を与えてくれるものです。

「food for thought」で「考えるべきこと」「考えるための要素」「判断するための材料」といった意味になります。

lose touch with

Their leaders have lost touch with what is happening in the country.
彼らの指導者たちは、国で何が起こっているのかわからなくなっている。

「lose touch with」で「最新のニュースや情報に疎くなっている」「時勢などに遅れる」「~との関わりがなくなる」といった意味になります。

weak yen / strong yen

The Japanese yen remained weak near 122 per dollar on Friday, hovering its lowest levels in over six years.

日本円は1ドル=122円付近で弱含み、6年以上ぶりの安値圏で推移している。

円安や円高など、通貨が「安い」「高い」は、「weak」「strong」で表現します。

last quarter

The last quarter is one of the four principal phases of the moon, occurring between full moon and new moon, when half the lighted surface is visible.

下限の月とは、月の4つの主要な満ち欠けのうち、満月と新月の間に位置し、光の当たっている面の半分が見える状態です。

日本では月の呼び名が沢山ありますね。英語にすると、ちょっと物足りないような・・・。

新月:New Moon
三日月:Waxing Crescent
上限の月:First Quarter
十日夜の月・十三夜月・小望月:Waxing Gibbous
満月:Full Moon
十六夜・立待月・居待月・寝待月・更待月:Waning Gibbous
下限の月:Last Quarter
有明月:Waning Crescent

reading week / reading break

There was a reading week in each term but no reading was prescribed.
各学期に読書週間があったが、読書は規定されていなかった。

「reading week」は、学期半ばにある授業のない1~2週間程度の期間で、本来、学生が読書や研究に集中するための期間とされていますが、特に読書などの課題はなく単なる休暇となっていることが多いです。「reading break」とも言われます。

hot water

Once the hot water runs out, you have to wait for the water heater to heat up more.
お湯がなくなると、給湯器が水をお湯にするのを待つ必要があります。

英語には「お湯」という言葉がないんですね。お湯と言いたいときは、「hot water」(暖かい水)または「boild water」(沸かした水)と言います。

そういえば、海外の家では、タンク式の給湯設備を使っていることが多いですね。タンク式の場合、シャワーが長いと、次の人がシャワーを浴びるときに途中でお湯がなくなって、水になってしまうことも。ホームステイなどではシャワーは短めにしましょう。
