<意味>

「out-and-out」は「全くの」「純然たる」「徹底した」という意味です。「out and out」は「徹底的に」「完全に」という副詞句で使えます。また、「out-and-outer」は「完全主義者」という意味で使うことができます。

「has not been spared from ~」で、「例外にもれず、~となっている/~の影響を受けている」という意味になります。

<意味>

「up in arms」は、「武器を持って立ち上がっている」という意味から、「憤慨している」「カンカンに怒っている」「憤っている」という慣用句として使われます。「arm」は「腕」という意味ですが、複数形になると「武器」という意味で使われることも多いです。

  1. Local residents are up in arms about the plan to build a new highway.
    地元の住人たちは、新しい高速道路の建設計画に憤慨している。
  2. The neighbors were up in arms because of the noisy party late at night.

<意味>

「up for it」は、提案や申し入れなどに対して、「参加する」「興味がある」「乗り気である」といったように前向きに返事をするときに使います。

  2. There’s a fitness class at the gym. Are you up for joining tomorrow?
    ジムでフィットネスクラスがあるんだ。明日参加する気はある?

<意味>

「take after」は「似ている」という意味ですが、自分より年上の血縁関係のある家族に性格・容姿・行動などが似ているという場合に限定して使います。

家族や他人に関係なく、見た目が似ているという場合は「resemble」や「look like」などを使います。

<例文>

  1. She takes after her grandmother with her love for gardening.
    彼女はおばあちゃん譲りで、庭いじりが大好きだ。
  2. He takes after his father in terms of musical talent.
    彼の音楽の才能は父親譲りだ。
  3. The puppy takes after its mother in appearance and playful behavior.
    その子犬は見た目や遊び好きな性格が母親に似ている。

out and about

Despite pain he has been getting out and about.
痛みにもかかわらず、彼はあちこち外出している。

「out and about」は、「あちこち出歩いて」「いろんな場所に行って」「外でアクティブに活動して」という意味の慣用句です。イギリスでよく使われる表現です。

get with it

You have to get with it.
さっさとやりなさい。

「get with it」は、「(やるべきこと)に取り掛かる」「ぐずぐずしないでやる」「気合いを入れてやる」「身を入れてやる」という意味の慣用句です。

また、「流行に遅れない」「新しい考えを受け入れる」という意味もあります。

get by

He managed to get by on a small amount of money.
彼は少ないお金でなんとかやりくりをした。

「get by」は、「なんとかやっていく」「なんとか暮らしていく」「(チェックなどを)通り抜ける」「うまくやっていく」という意味の慣用句です。

above oneself

I think he is getting a little bit above himself.
彼はちょっとうぬぼれて始めてきたんじゃないかと思うよ。

「above oneself」は、「うぬぼれる」「天狗になる」「思いあがる」という意味の慣用句です。

get underway

We will get this underway for her.
彼女の手続きを始めますね。

「get ~ underway」だと「~を始める」「~を進める」という意味になります。「~ gets underway」の場合は、「~が始まる」「~が進行する」という意味になります。

about to

I’m about to do my homework.
今、宿題をやろうと思っていたところだよ。

「about to」は、「今まさにやろうとしていたところ」という意味です。

a piece of cake

The exam was a piece of cake.
試験は楽勝だったよ。

「a piece of cake」は「一切れのケーキ」という意味ですが、「ケーキ一切れぐらい簡単に食べられる」というところから、「簡単にできる」「朝飯前」「たわいない」という意味で使われます。

draw a blank

She’s drawn a blank after years of searching for him.
何年も彼を探したけど、無駄に終わった。

「draw a blank」は「外れくじを引く」という意味から、「(試したけど)失敗に終わる」「(求めるものを)得られなかった、発見できなかった」、「思い出せない」という慣用句として使われます。

in due course

A further announcement will be made in due course.
時期がきたら、さらなる発表を行います。

「in due course」は、「やがて」「そのうちに」「事が順調に運んだら」「適当な時に」という意味の慣用句です。

status quo

This is the only way the status quo can be maintained.
現状を維持するにはこれしか方法がない。

「status quo」はラテン語に由来する言葉で、「現状」、「そのままの状態」、「体制」といった意味になります。

pros and cons

We sat for hours debating the pros and cons of setting up our project.
自分たちのプロジェクトを始めるにあたって、賛否両論の議論を何時間も行った。

「pros」は「賛成」、「cons」は「反対」という意味です。「pros and cons」は物事の良し悪しを議論するときによく使われる表現です。

done for the day

We’re done for the day.
今日はここまでで終わりにします。

「done for the day」は、その日にやるべき分の授業・仕事・部活動などが終わったという意味です。「I’m done for the day.」であれば、「今日はこの辺で(勉強や仕事を)切り上げるよ。」となります。

a heads-up / Heads up

I’ll give you a heads up.
前もって知らせるよ。

「a heads-up」と名詞になる場合は、「注意喚起」や「警告」という意味で、「事前のお知らせ」といった感じで使います。
「Heads up!」と動詞になる場合、「気をつけて」「注意して」という意味になります。

last-minute

We understand that there are many last-minute confirmations and changes due to the pandemic.
パンデミックのため、ぎりぎりに確定したり、変更になってしまう状況が多々生じてしまうことは了解しています。

「last-minute」は、「時間的にぎりぎりの」「直前の」「間際の」「土壇場の」という意味です。

fall behind / catch up

How can I catch up in a class when I have fell behind?
学校の授業に遅れを取ってしまったら、どうやって遅れを取り戻せばいいですか?

「fall behind」は「遅れを取る」「落ちこぼれる」、「catch up」は「遅れを取り戻す」「追いつく」という意味になります。
